Aye Matey! Are You Ready for a Treasure Quest? (Summer Camp)

“Treasure Quest” is the theme for this year's summer camps.  Each district is offering a day camp program that will allow your Cub Scout to participate in activities such as BB gun shooting, archery, games, sports, crafts, and nature activities.  Our district day camp, known as Akela Days, will be held on June 4-5.  In addition, Cub Scouts have the opportunity to attend an overnight camping experience at Rhodes France Scout Reservation south of Pana.  Scouts of all ages may attend the three-day, two night Cub Scout Summer Camp on July 22-24.  First and second year Webelos may attend a three-day, two-night camp known as Webelos Woods on July 16-18.  This camp will prepare your Webelos Scout for summer camp with their Boy Scout troop.

Important Notes:
  • We will submit all registrations as a unit, so please make sure you turn in your registrations to Tod no later than April 1st!!  (Ideally, we would like to have them turned in at the Blue and Gold Banquet on March 21st.  If you submit your forms after the early registration date, there is an additional charge of $15 for day camps and $10 for overnight camps.
  • Tiger Cubs (1st Graders) MUST have an adult partner attend camp with them.
  • Older Scouts (2nd - 5th Graders) require one (1) adult leader for every (4) scouts.
  • Scouts who qualified to have the pack pay for their camp fees (sold more than $375 in popcorn) still MUST submit registration forms prior to the early registration cut-off date.  If you are uncertain as to whether or not you qualify, please contact Tina for confirmation.
  • We do not want ANY scout to miss out on the summer camp experience because of financial issues.  There are several options available for assistance.  Please, please contact Tina or Tod for more information.
  • Make sure you complete the annual medical and health record and submit it to Tod at the May pack meeting.
If you did not receive a mailer with the registration forms or if you need additional copies, please use the link below.  Also, if you have any questions or concerns, please let us know.  Thanks.

Pinewood Derby Races

Have you survived all of the ice and snow we have had this winter?  Hopefully, the winter weather will give us a break soon because it is almost time for one of the most fun Cub Scout events.  That's right!  It's time to go racing; Pinewood Derby Racing that is.  Below is a reminder of the times for each of the events, both the Pack Race and the District Race at the Village Square Mall.  If you need any assistance with car design or building, please contact Tod as soon as possible.  He will be more than happy to help.

The Pack Derby is scheduled for Saturday, February 12th, 2011 at the Effingham KC Hall.  Each age level will compete independently and the top three in each age division will move on to compete in the Pack Grand Prix.  There will also be judging for the best car design.  Trophies will be awarded to the top finishers in age division.  The schedule is as follows:
Tigers:  8:30 – 9:30
Wolves:  9:30 – 10:30
Bears:  10:30 – 11:30
Webelos:  11:30 – 12:30
The Pack Grand Prix for the top three winners in each age division will take place on Monday, February 21st, 2011 at the monthly pack meeting.  This is a "winner-take-all" race with a trophy for 1st place only.

The Derby Race at Village Square Mall will be held on February 26th, 2011.  This race is open to all area scouts, as well as a “Geritol” or open division for any non-Cub Scout or adult.  The registration fee is $5.00 per scout.  Please do not be late for this derby, as no cars will be entered after the start of the race.  The mall schedule is as follows:
Tigers:  10:00 – 11:30
Wolves:  12:30 – 2:00
Bears:  2:00 – 3:30
Webelos:  8:30 – 10:00

November Pack Activities

Well, we survived our fall camping trips.  I hope everyone had a good time and survived the cold weather.  Fortunately, it wasn't wet and rainy.  Even though we just finished the fall camp-outs, we are already making plans for the spring camp-outs.  Let us know if you have any feedback or thoughts on things that you would like to see or do.  We may even try to expand the spring events to camping both Friday and Saturday nights.

Just a reminder, November is our Bake-A-Cake pack meeting.  This was mistakenly left out of the October newsletter, so make sure you remind any other scout parents to bring their cakes.  The categories for this year are Thanksgiving, Christmas, and anything Scouting (camping, etc.) and there are prizes for the top cake in each category, as well as a prize for "Best-in-Show".  Please let your sons do as much of the baking and decorating as possible.  Obviously, the older boys will be able to do much more than the younger ones, but this should be an opportunity for them to get familiar with the kitchen.

Mark your calendars for these upcoming events.  We will be selling popcorn in front of KMart from 4-7 PM on Friday, November 19th.  Then, we will be selling popcorn in front of Family Video from 3-7 PM on Saturday, November 20th.  We will credit each participating scout with a portion of the sales based on the total amount sold during that time.  This can help your scout reach a new level for their Fall Sales Prize.  A sign up sheet will be available at the pack meeting so we know how many scouts will be selling each day.

Finally, remember to turn in your popcorn money at the pack meeting on Monday, November 15th.  See you there!

Happy Trails

It is time for our fall campouts.  The first one for Tigers and Wolves is coming up this Friday night at Lake Sara.  (Contact Tod or your den leader if you need directions to the camp.)  Make sure to pack warm clothing.  The forecast is clear and cool, but thankfully, not as cold as it is supposed to be tonight.

The campout for Bears and Webelos will be next Saturday night.  The preliminary forecast is for rain, so let's hope and pray that the forecast changes between now and then.  The only good news is that the forecast for that weekend is warmer than this weekend.  Hopefully, that part will still hold for the campout.

I have posted the camping supply checklist as a reminder of items that you might need for camping.  Adjust as needed for the weather and your personal needs / preferences.  The Pack will provide dinner for both scouts and parents / guardians, but everyone will need to bring their own food for breakfast.

As always, if you have any questions, please contact Tod.  See you at the campout....
Happy trails to you, until we meet again.
Happy trails to you, keep smilin' until then.
